Questions or tips about any mage spec can be dropped here.
Rotation, glyphs and talent discussions (I'll edit this thread and keep it up to date)
I did some talent testing on several bosses and also did alot research in logfiles from top mages. It's alot info so i am not going drop it all in here now. This is ment for guildies who are interested in playing a mage and be above average.

Ask and we awnser or find it out for you!! :p

Hey guys,

Here are my questions. I'm Arcane mage, ilvl 620-ish and do about 16k dps in Heroics.
Always looking to improve.
I wanted to discuss talents, rotation is explained perfect on icy veins.
Tier 1: Currently i'm going for Ice Floes, because even in heroics, a lot of movement is required
Tier 2: I've chosen Alter Time, but i find it not particulary useful as a 'free heal' because it's not always possible to communicate this with the healer(s) - I plan to switch to Ice Barrier, what do you think?
Tier 3: Frostjaw, for the silence effect
Tier 4: I've gone with Greater Invis for solo-ing, to remove DoTs, but maybe Cauterize is better to go for when healers are strained to give them some time? I've always found it quite useful to use Cauterize, then Ice block so survive a massive attach from the boss. Basically a free "Ignore Game Mechanics" talent; and it's passive, so Invis or Cauterize?
Tier 5: Supernova i found quite useful, because of the Interrupting effect but mostly because it can be cast while moving and hits multiple mobs.
Tier 6: I've chosen 'Rune of Power' and it is awesome +15% damage for free. But hard even in heroics to stay close to the Rune. I use Presence of Mind often to re-apply the Rune after moving. Incanter's Flow seems to be a good alternative; what are your experiences?
Tier 7: I've chosen Arcane Orb because it is often important to kill adds asap, and building Arcane Charge early in the fight.

What do you guys think?

Hey ara,
Tier 1: ice floes is the way to go. You will use it alot in Highmaul raids also and it gives arcane more mobility
Tier 2: Alter time is a nice cd to get you back on full health if you pop it before a big hit. But if you go for alter time you have to take it from a dps/ mobility perspective. Like if you have to move for a mechanic, pop alter time, blink, cast, pop alter time again and continue casting. Ice barrier is used the most because you can mitigate incoming dmg more frequently.
Tier 3: Doesn't really matter, you can take ring of frost but frostjaw is also fine. Its more pvp talent
Tier 4: Depends on fight. Cauterize is pretty nice especially in progress fights to cover mistakes. Altho cauterize brings you to 33% and you get a debuff that dmg you 28% overtime. So if you die with another ticking debuff, you are screwed. Then greater invis is better to take away DoT's. Example: Twins, the fire gives a ticking debuff, it hurts alot. If you use cauterize as talent, then the only way to survive is ice block. You will use 2 abilities for one mechanic. So greater invis is the best option there. take the fire, invis+ 90%dmg reduction and removes DoT. So Tier 4 is rly fight depending. ( Cold snap is very useful in Kargath Mythic but i dont use it on other fights. You also could use it to reset presence on mind and get another instant cast)
Tier 5: Supernova is a good talent and makes arcane a bit more mobile also. especially dg's i would go with that. Nether Tempest is also good, It's a bit hard to use it proprly with our current haste but later on in the expasion it probably changes to the n1 talent. Atm supernova is n1.
Tier 6: Rune of power is the talent to use as arcane. it's 8yards range makes it pretty big and you can move around a bit.. if you place 2 next to eachother or 1 in front of you, you can blink in it and continue casting.. ice floes to the next rune and you will keep the 15% buff.. downside of rune of power is the casttime.. i read that some mages macro'd it with presence so that's an option for you. Incanter's Flow is a good alternative for arcane. saves casttime and you dont have to look for your rune of power. Dps wise there isn't a big difference. rune is a bit better.
Tier 7: Prismatic Crystal is n1. 10%extra dmg on the crystal. It takes some time to get used to it but when it's in your sytem you will find it awesome. Arcane orb is a good talent also, Like you said, especially killing adds and to gain stacks fast. Dont take Overpowered. Maybe in the future but for now, don't touch it.

i hope you are happy with my reply and GL

if you choose for Prismatic Crystal as tier 7, unglyph Arcane Power then. It lines up nicely with every crystal, both 1.5 min cd. (arcane)
